Thoughts on
preservation
From our founder
"I worked in India’s commercial textile and garment production industries for almost a decade and witnessed how “lowest cost” was always the priority - never origin, sustainability, or longevity. In
fact, those things were never even discussed. Across the textile and handicraft sectors, machines quietly and steadily replaced skilled hands, and consumers dismissed price tags that barely reflected the hours of labourious craftsmanship behind each piece, often favouring the bright, flashy world of fast fashion with it's unobtainable low prices.
That experience led me to found Parijat Store: a platform dedicated to championing the finest of Indian textile artistry from across the country, creating greater visibility, recognition, and opportunity for the artisans behind the fabrics.
Handloom weaving has existed in India for centuries and each method of weaving is an art form of extraordinary skill and artistry. Within communities, knowledge has been carefully preserved and passed down - generation after generation. Yet today, the rise of fast fashion, mechanised production, and changing consumer habits place this heritage under increasing threat.
The consequences extend beyond loss of livelihood. With the resignation of each weaver and the installation of machines in their place, the knowledge and cultural heritage that have shaped India's textile landscape for centuries slowly fade.
Through Parijat Store, my hope is to restore dignity, value, and respect to the people who, despite adversity, continue to sit at the looms and create objects of beauty with their bare hands."
Our
Weavers
We work with carefully selected suppliers and weaving communities across India, chosen through months of research, sourcing, sampling, and quality checks. Our priorities are authenticity, exceptional craftsmanship, and traceability, ensuring that every fabric has a story we can stand behind.
We strive to strike a balance between offering beautifully crafted products at a fair price while ensuring the artisans who weave our fabrics are fairly compensated for their skill and time. In today's market, this is an increasingly difficult task. Machine-woven textiles have become widely available, offering similar-looking products at a fraction of the cost through speed, scale, and automation.
Handloom weaving follows a very different path. Every metre of fabric represents hours — sometimes days — of skilled labour, with techniques that have been refined and passed down through generations. Behind each textile is a community of weavers, dyers, spinners, and craftspeople whose knowledge and artistry are woven into every piece.
Behind each fabric we use, there are multiple faces, multiple names, multiple hands. We acknowledge the efforts of each - and celebrate the cultural legacy they continue to contribute to.
